Jeremiah 50:40-42
No man abides in Babylon; neither any son of man
By Brother Mike (12-16-17; 48 minutes)

40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor [cities] thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein .
41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon .

INTRODUCTION

In this study of verses 40-42 of Jeremiah 50, we continue with the theme of judgment upon Babylon (upon this world including all churches) ever since Judgment Day began on May 21, 2011. We are first told that just as there was no man still living in Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities thereof after Yahweh brought His judgment and rained down fire and brimstone upon them, so also, we are told, there is no man still abiding in Babylon (this world including all churches) after Yahweh brought judgment upon it on May 21, 2011. Yet, if this is true that no man now abides or dwells in Babylon, then why do we still see people physically abiding or dwelling in this world including the churches?

Then, we are told just who it is that has been raised up to come up against Babylon (this world including all churches): it is a people from the north, and a great nation, and, we are told, many kings are raised up from the coasts of the earth to come against her. Who are these people and kings raised up against Babylon during the days of judgment that we are now in?

And, finally, we are told that these people and kings who are raised up against Babylon (against this world including all churches) hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and do not show mercy: their voice is like the sea, and they ride upon horses, everyone put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon. Does this mean that these people and kings literally hold the bow and the lance, and that they are literally cruel with no mercy, and that their voice is literally like the sea, and they literally ride upon horses like a man to the battle?

These questions and more are what we intend to answer as we now contemplate each verse, one by one.

Verse 50:40

40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor [cities] thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein .

In this verse, we first read, As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof. The first question that arises is, just how did God overthrow Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof? And, when we go to Genesis 19 to refresh our minds on this account, we read,

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city .
16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city
17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed .
18
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord
19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die :
20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live .
21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken .

22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou become thither. Therefore, the name of the city was called Zoar
23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar .
24
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven ;
25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground .
26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt .
27 And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD :
28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace .
29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt .
30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters .

So, what we find in this account is that Yahweh overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities by first having rescued Lot, his wife, and his two daughters. But, Lot's wife looked back afterward so that she turned into a pillar of salt. She was just too attached to Sodom, her friends, her house, and the life she had while in Sodom, so she had difficulty letting go. The result was that judgment came upon her, and she was changed into a pillar of salt.

Now, Lot's wife was a picture of all those who today have chosen to remain in all the churches and to not depart out in disobedience to the Lord's command. Instead of having departed out by Judgment Day of May 21, 2011, they looked back and couldn't let go of their friends, their family, their church, and they would not depart out of their church, but instead remained in their church, and the result was that Yahweh's judgment came upon them. It was as if they turned into a pillar of salt as they lost any possibility of their ever being eternally saved. Indeed, they have been destroyed in the spiritual fires of Yahweh's wrath because they would not obey Yahweh's command to come out of their church (see Why leave all churches? ).

But, Lot and his two daughters were rescued from the fires of Sodom, and they are a picture of all the elect who have obeyed the Lord's command to depart out of all the churches by Judgment Day on May 21, 2011. Like Lot, they have departed into the mountains, which are a picture of God, and they can look down and see that the spiritual fires of God's wrath have come upon all the churches and the world, and that no one spiritually remains there.

But, now, getting back to our verse, we read, As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof; that is, just as God wiped out Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities so that there was no one alive left in them, we read, so shall no man abide there. That is, just as Sodom and Gomorrah were left with no man abiding in them, so have all the churches and the world (Babylon) been left with no man spiritually abiding in them ever since Judgment Day began on May 21, 2011. This is because, like Lot and his two daughters, the elect have fled to the mountains; that is, they have fled to their own spiritual land in Christ to escape Judgment Day, but all the rest including all those who have remained in all the churches have been burned up in the spiritual flames of Yahweh's wrath on May 21, 2011, which has come upon the entire world of people including all the people who have remained in all the churches. None of them any longer spiritually abide there. This is because none of them any longer have any possibility of being eternally saved, which means that they are all guaranteed to remain spiritually dead in Adam, and to remain spiritually dead means that they are incapable of spiritually abiding anywhere, for they are spiritually dead. So, we can see how it is that ever since Judgment Day began that no man spiritually abides there in Babylon just as no man abided or dwelt in Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities after Yahweh's judgment was brought upon them.

But, not only does no man spiritually abide in this world ever since May 21, 2011, but our verse says, neither shall any son of man dwell therein. The phrase, son of man immediately reveals to us that this verse is referring to Christ, for the title son of man is the most common title given to Christ in the New Testament. So, when our verse states that neither shall any son of man dwell therein, it is telling us that neither shall Christ dwell therein, which means that ever since Judgment Day began on May 21, 2011, Christ no longer dwells in Babylon (in the world including all the churches). And, since Christ is the doorway to eternal salvation as He once said, I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture (John 10:9), it means that there is no longer any eternal salvation possible because Christ, the doorway to heaven, no longer dwells therein, which means that ever since May 21, 2011, the door to eternal life cannot be found by anyone in this world including all the churches. O, yes, they may think that they have been saved after May 21, 2011, but this is only because they have been deceived into a false gospel with a false Christ. The true Christ is nowhere to be found, but the false Christs are everywhere. They are in the Catholic Church, the Pentecostal Church, Charismatic Church, the Baptist Church, the Community Church, the Independent Church, the 7th Day Adventist Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Mormon Church, the Jehovah's Witness Church, the Assembly of God Church, and they are in every other so-called Christian church as well because ever since May 21, 1988, the true Christ left all the churches to allow for the Antichrist, the counterfeit Christ, the false Christ to enter into the temple and begin his rule over all the churches as Yahweh's judgment against them for their rebellion as judgment must begin at the house of God (1Peter 4:17; listen to 2Thes. 2:1-11 - The Man of Sin!).

So, to summarize, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof so that no man any longer physically abided there, so, also, He has spiritually overthrown Babylon (this world including all the churches) so that no man any longer spiritually abides there, for they are all spiritually dead in Adam and so cannot abide anywhere. The elect, on the other hand, have fled to their own spiritual land in God, but everyone else has remained in this world including all the churches to suffer the spiritual wrath of Yahweh, which is the removal of any possibility of being eternally saved. Not only does no man any longer spiritually abide in this world including all the churches, for they are all spiritually dead in Adam and so cannot abide anywhere, but the son of man, Jesus Christ, no longer abides there either, which is just another way of saying that there is no longer any eternal salvation possible in this world including all the churches, for the door to eternal life, Jesus Christ, no longer abides there. What we have, then, is another verse which teaches the end to any possibility of eternal salvation ever since Judgment Day began on May 21, 2011 (see also " Is God Still Saving? " and Isaiah 13:10, scroll down to verse 10 and Isaiah 13:14 and  Revelation 18 study - Part 3, scroll to verses 21-23 and Revelation 9 - Part 2, verse 6  and Jeremiah 50, scroll down to verse 12 and  Jeremiah 50:16-17 , Jeremiah 50:40 ).

Verse 50:41
:

41 Behold, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth .

Here, we first read, Behold. To use this word, behold, is just another way of saying tune in, pay attention, and listen very carefully to what is about to be said; it is very important.

Then, we read, a people shall come from the north, and a great nation. We had already learned that this people, which is a great nation, that comes from the north against Babylon refers to the Medes (see Isaiah 13:17 , Jeremiah 50:3, scroll down to verse 3 ). And, we learned that the Medes typify the elect who in our day ever since Judgment Day began on May 21, 2011, have come up against Babylon (this world including all churches) to declare Yahweh's judgment upon them by His removal of any possibility of their eternal salvation.

But, now, our verse continues and says, and many kings shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. Even though this is written in the future tense because when this was first written it was still in the future when many kings would be raised up from the coasts of the earth, it can now be translated, and many kings are [currently] being raised up from the coasts of the earth because ever since Judgment Day began on May 21, 2011, many kings are currently being raised up from the coasts of the earth. But, the word translated as coasts is really the word sides or recesses so that our verse now reads, and many kings are being raised up from the sides [recesses] of the earth. The idea is that many kings are being raised up from around the earth. And, who are these kings currently being raised up from around the earth to come up against Babylon (to come up against this world including all churches)? Yes, they are the elect who are all prophets, priests, and, yes, kings. They are being raised up from around the world to declare the end to eternal salvation as judgment against Babylon (this world and all churches) for all her sins, and they are a great nation or people because their Lord is great, and He dwells in them.

Verse 50:42
:

42 They shall hold the bow and the lance: they are cruel, and will not shew mercy: their voice shall roar like the sea, and they shall ride upon horses, every one put in array, like a man to the battle, against thee, O daughter of Babylon .

In this verse, we first read, They shall hold the bow and the lance. The bow represents the tongue as we read in Jeremiah 9:3:

Jer 9:3 And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD .

And, again, we read in Psalm 64:3,

Ps 64:3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words . . .

And, there are other verses which infer that the tongue is the bow as well. For instance, we read in Jeremiah 9:8,

Jer 9:8 Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait .

And, we read in Proverbs 25:18,

Pr 25:18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow .

Now, if a man that bears false witness against his neighbor is a sharp arrow by the words which come from his tongue, then his tongue can be likened to a bow because it is a bow from which arrows come.

Next, in our verse which stated, They shall hold the bow and the lance, we learned that the bow represents the tongue from which words are shot out like arrows, but what does the lance represent? The word translated as lance is most commonly translated as spear, and a spear is what Joshua held up to ensure the victory over the city of Ai. We read in Joshua 8,

18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city .
19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire .
20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers .
21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai
22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape .
23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua .
24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword .
25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai
26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai

So, from this account of Israel's victory over Ai, we see that the spear symbolizes victory. And, now, we can return to our verse to begin to see what it is saying. We first read, They shall hold the bow and the spear. Who shall hold the bow and the spear? Why, it is the elect who hold the bow and the spear as they declare judgment upon this world and all the churches ever since May 21, 2011. That they hold the bow means that they hold the tongue that speaks the words of judgment. And, that they hold the lance means that they hold the victory. So, we now see what it means that they shall hold the bow and the spear.

But, now, continuing in our verse, we read, they are cruel, and will not shew mercy. That is, as the elect shoot out the words from their tongues (their bows) of no more eternal salvation possible for anyone, it appears that they are being cruel, and will not show mercy because what they are saying is that Christ is no longer forgiving sins, and that eternal salvation has ended. Yet, it is not that the elect are being cruel, but they are simply obeying their Lord to bring judgment upon Babylon (this world including all the churches). And, it is not the Lord who is being cruel either, for He was very merciful in that He even saved the elect, but He is now being just in that according to the law, the wages of sin is death, and so He must enforce the law and bring death to all the sinners as He is now insuring ever since May 21, 2011 by declaring the certain death of all those who have sinned by no possibility of their eternal salvation. Yes, they now have no possibility of eternal salvation, which insures that they will all die due to their sins, which is justice according to the law. So, although it appears that the Lord is being cruel, He is not; rather, He is being just. So, it appears that the elect and their Lord are being cruel without mercy as our verse states, but, in the full scope of things, they are being just, for the wages of sin is death, and all have sinned; therefore, all deserve to die. But, thanks be to our Lord Jesus Christ who died on behalf of His elect that they should no longer deserve to die according to the law, but that they should live forevermore according to the Spirit of grace.

Now, our verse continues, their voice shall roar like the sea. In the Bible, the word translated as sea can be symbolic of the people of the world, or the wicked (unsaved) people of the world as we realize in the following two verses: we read in Psalm 98:7,

Ps 98:7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein

And, again, we read in Isaiah 17,

Isa 17:12 Woe to the multitude of many people [the nations of the world], which make a noise like the noise of the seas; and to the rushing of nations, that make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters !

And, we read in Isaiah 57:20,

Isa 57:20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt .

In addition, we know that the fish of the sea symbolize the people of the world because Christ once said to His disciples who were fishermen that He would make them fishers of men of the world instead of fishers of fish in the sea. The idea is that fishing for fish in the sea is a picture of fishing for men in the world. Thus, we see, again, that the sea represents the world of unsaved or wicked people.

But, now, let's apply what we have learned to our verse. It reads, their [the elect's] voice shall roar like the sea. What does this mean? Since the sea is symbolic of this world of unsaved people, we are being told that the elect's voice shall roar like the unsaved people of the world. That is, the voice of the elect will sound like the voice of the unsaved. To put it another way, as the elect bring the message of no more eternal salvation to the world, their voice will sound like the unsaved of the world in that the elect's voice does not bring the message of eternal salvation just as the voice of the unsaved of the world does not bring the message of eternal salvation. In other words, during Judgment Day that we are now in, the voice of the elect sounds like the unsaved (the sea) because like the unsaved people of the world, the voice of the elect does not carry the message of eternal salvation. Yes, [the elect's voice] roars like the sea with no eternal life.

Now, our verse continues, and they [the elect] shall ride on horses. Does this mean that ever since Judgment Day began on May 21, 2011 that the elect are riding on literal horses as they gallop around the world with their message of judgment? Of course not! In that the elect are now riding on horses simply means that they are coming in strength because horses are symbolic of strength. For instance, we read in Psalm 33,

Ps 33:17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he [the horse] deliver any by his great strength .

And, again, we read,

Ps 147:10 He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man .

In addition, we read in Jeremiah 8,

Jer 8:16 The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein .

And, we read in Jeremiah 12:5,

Jer 12:5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan ?

So, from these verses, we see that horses have to do with strength. And, in that our verse says that they [the elect] ride on horses during the day of judgment means that they come in strength during Judgment Day that we are now in. Yes, as we, the elect, get out the message of judgment, that there is no longer the possibility of eternal life for the inhabitants of this world and all the churches, we will find that we are given strength by the Holy Spirit, and this is what it means that we ride on horses: we come in the strength of Yahweh.

Now, the next thing that we read in our verse is this: [everyone] put in array, like a man to the battle. Literally, it reads, being arrayed as a man to the battle. So, they ride upon horses, being arrayed as a man to the battle. But, how can they [plural] ride upon horses, being arrayed as a man [singular] to the battle? In other words, how can they (plural) be arrayed as one man? Do you see it? The one man is a picture Christ, and they who ride upon horses, being arrayed as a single man to the battle are the elect. Thus, this is simply telling us that the elect ride upon horses; that is, they come in strength as we had previously learned, and they are arrayed as one man, namely Jesus Christ. This makes abundant sense when we realize that the elect are Christ's body so that the elect can in one sense be many while at the same time being one body of Christ, or one man. And, in that the elect are being arrayed as the one-man Jesus Christ means that each of the elect are being so ordered in His body that the body functions in perfect harmony as one man, Jesus Christ, with each person in the body playing his or her God-ordained part. As we read in 1Corinthians 12,

14 For the body is not one member, but many .
15
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body
16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body ?
17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling ?
18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him .
19
And if they were all one member, where were the body ?
20 But now are they many members, yet but one body .
21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you .
22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary :
23
And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness .
24 For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked :
25 That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another .
26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it

Therefore, that the elect are being arrayed as one man to the battle means that the elect are so being ordered within the body of Christ that they all function in harmony as one man, Jesus Christ, to the battle of this day, Judgment Day, where the elect bring judgment against Babylon (this world including all the churches) by their message of no more eternal salvation.

Finally, we are given the reason why the elect are being arrayed as a man to the battle: it is to come against thee, O daughter of Babylon. And, the daughter of Babylon refers to the world including all the churches worldwide, which the elect have come against ever since Judgment Day began on May 21, 2011 with their message of judgment: that there is no longer any possibility of eternal salvation for them, but they have been judged to death when on the Last Day of Judgment Day that we are now in, all who are in the graves and unsaved, and all who still remain and are unsaved will be brought forth to eternal damnation in the fires of annihilation. The elect, on the other hand, will be changed, in the twinkle of an eye into glorious new spiritual bodies to dwell for all eternity in the new incorruptible heaven and earth to be created from the ashes of this world. Thus, we can say that the earth will stand forever, but in a different form fit to house the newly transformed elect.

CONCLUSION

We found that even as no man physically abided in Sodom and Gomorrah after Yahweh brought His judgment of fire and brimstone upon them, so also no man now spiritually abides or dwells in this world including the churches (Babylon) after Yahweh brought spiritual Judgment upon it on May 21, 2011. O yes, people still abide in Babylon (this world including all churches) physically, but, spiritually, they do not abide or dwell in this world including the churches because they are all spiritually dead in Adam with no chance of coming to life, and so cannot spiritually abide or dwell anywhere because they are dead.

Then, we discovered that the people from the north, a great nation, that are raised up against Babylon, and the kings raised up from the coasts of the earth against Babylon are all the elect. The elect are said to be raised up from the North because the Medes who typified the elect came from the North to destroy ancient Babylon in 539 BC. The elect are said to be a great nation or people because Christ dwells in each one of them, and He is great. And, the elect are all kings because Christ who dwells in them is a king.

Next, in that the elect hold the bow and the lance means that they hold the tongue by which judgment is declared upon Babylon, and they hold the spear which means they hold the victory over Babylon even as Joshua held the victory over Ai as long as he held out the spear toward them. Then, the elect are said to be cruel without mercy because their message of no more eternal salvation does not allow for mercy as it is no longer possible that anyone can be forgiven and saved ever since May 21, 2011. Furthermore, the voice of the elect is said to roar like the sea because it sounds like a message from the unsaved people of the world, which cannot bring eternal life. That is, just as no message from the unsaved of the world can bring eternal life, so also can no message of the elect bring eternal life because eternal life is no longer possible. In addition, the elect are said to ride on horses because they come in strength against Babylon. And, finally, the elect are said to be put in array like a man to the battle because they are so ordered or arranged in the body of Christ that they come as one man, namely Jesus Christ. Each of the elect take on his or her position and role in the body of Christ, which results in their coming as a man, Jesus Christ, to the battle against the daughter of Babylon (this world including all churches).

Now, may Yahweh through our Lord Jesus Christ, bless thee, and keep thee: Yahweh make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: Yahweh lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace .
